Background
This document describes a modification to the V1.5 carbonator to both correct and prevent a failure where a leak in the ice bank agitator can pump ice bank water out of the machine.
The failure was traced to a piece of plastic tubing which can be softened by excessive heat from the agitator motor. This modification allows ice bank water to flow through a cooling loop in the motor, preventing the motor from heating the tube to the point where it can soften and leak.
Affected Machines
The modification should be performed on all standup machines that currently use the new V1.5 carbonator (Bevi P/N #111193-01 (formerly 100052-01) and available for ordering on orders.bevi.co), whether or not they have a history of leaking. The V1.5 carbonator is identified by the presence of 2 plugged ⅜” John Guest fittings on the “operator's left” side of the front panel. Note that this includes older machines that have been field retrofit with the V1.5 carbonator. This does not affect countertop machine.
Symptoms of Leak
- Leak appears to originate from inside the carbonator on the "operator’s right" side.
- The leak will continue as long as the machine has power, even if the main water supply is turned off or disconnected.
- The water level in the ice bank will be low.
- There will be a gurgling noise coming from the “operator's right” side of the carbonator that occurs once the ice bank water reaches its minimum level.
Time Required: 5 minutes, can be done during a normal service visit
Parts Required:
- 3.7" in length of 3/8" outer diameter tubing
- 2x of push-to-connect 3/8" outer diameter elbows
- 2" in length of insulation tubing, long enough to cover the 3/8 outer diameter tubing section after connected with the elbows
- 2x 3/8" locking clips for push-to-connect fittings
Please see assembly drawing below, or request a kit via Bevi ordering site: P/N 720-0163 (formerly 106060-01).
Process
1. Power off the machine and open the door.
2. Find the two ports labeled “RECIRCULATION OUT” and “RECIRCULATION IN”
3. Remove and keep the 2 locking clips.
4. Remove and discard the 2 plugs
5. Install the RECIRCULATION JUMPER (Bevi P/N 720-0163) in the two open ports.
6. Reinstall the two reserved locking clips from step 1.
7. Verify water level in ice bank and refill as necessary.
8. If no leak was present at time of modification the machine can be restarted immediately. If the machine had begun to leak before modification, it should not be restarted for at least 12 hours.
Logging the Retrofit Change into the Service Panel for Tracking:
After the retrofit has been performed, it's important to log the change in the service panel, in order to keep track which carbonators are retrofitted and which are not.
1. To do so, log into the Service Panel on the touchscreen, and select the Retrofit section towards the bottom.
2. Select Change.
3. Select the Recirculation Jumper option, and then select Save.
4. You now have the ability to track all the jumper retrofitted machines in the Bevi Portal.
FAQs
1. When should the modification be made?
Every affected machine should be modified the next time it is visited by a technician for repair or restocking.
2. Are any additional steps required to correct a leak that has already occurred?
If a machine has developed a leak due to this issue, it can often be corrected by performing this modification and then leaving the machine turned off for at least 12 hours. If the machine continues to leak after being modified and restarted, the carbonator must be replaced and returned for repair. Contact Bevi Support if this is the case.
3. Is this leak still possible in a modified machine?
After modification the machine is only susceptible to this leak if it is run without water in the ice bank. If a machine is found to be running in this condition it should be turned off for at least 12 hours before being restarted. Once restarted the machine is OK to use if the leak does not appear. If the leak does appear on restart, the carbonator should be replaced and returned for repair.
